The Tumwater, WA Area
Tumwater is located on the western part of the state of Washington near the Deschutes River, which enters Budd Inlet on the southern part of Puget Sound. It has shared boundaries with the neighboring capital of Washington, Olympia. The city is approximately 31 miles southwest of Tacoma and 62 miles southwest of Seattle. It is the oldest existing Puget Sound settlement. It is referred to as the Oregon Trail and the Cowlitz Trail.
Before American settlement, descendants of the Nisqually, Squaxin Island, and Chehalis natives occupied the Puget area where they harvested salmon near the inlets and hunted and planted on the prairies. American settlers first arrived in 1845; led by Michael T. Simmons. Then the city was named New Market, but was later renamed to Tumwater.
One of the early records of racial division in the area is that of a mixed race man by the name of George Bush who settled north of the Columbia River upon entering the area with Simmons; due to the fact that the Oregon law banning residency of mulattoes was not enforced in that area.
The earliest “road” built in the town was a wagon trail cut by those first residents, which would later become part of the Oregon Trail. This community would lead to the expansion into Olympia, Seattle, Whidbey Island, and other Puget Sound towns. Much of the growth seen can be contributed to its location near the Deschutes River.
